Innovation

How to be more “business-like” in an educational setting

  • Is “what you have always done” ineffective and boring?
    • Creation of new, innovative ways to organize events such as leadership academies, new teacher induction models and leadership and teacher retreats
  • Do you know how to use technology to your advantage?
    • Enhancements to typical programs and departments through innovation and modernization using technology tools
      • Websites for communication, signup or surveys
      • App building for scheduling (free and paid)
      • Advanced Excel, Word and Google functions to assist with organization of events or recognition and budgeting
  • How do you increase funding and community/partner participation to your organization with the exception of grant writing?
    • Use of business principles to increase communication and involvement of business partners and community partners
      • Return on Investment (ROI) important for partners – using data to drive decisions and to track investments from both partners
      • I saw an increase of 55% in funding from one year to another when running ROI reports for donations made from partners using data from an app
  • How can you relate to those you lead and understand how to better collaborate for innovation?
    • With my extensive background and 29 years of experience, I have served in the following roles to assist you with this – Director of Secondary Education, Director of Professional Learning & Title IIA, Director of CTAE, Director of Instructional Technology & Grants, K-12 Math Coordinator, K-12 Science/Health Coordinator, Broad Field 7-12 Science Teacher and Adolescent Young Adult Science National Board Certified Teacher.
  • How do you motivate teachers to want to attend Professional Learning?
    • Creation of badges, pins, certificates, and other microcredentials the teachers can display on email signature lines or on websites, Twitter and other social media platforms
    • Innovative ways to increase Professional Learning – see article about Triple Workshop – how I was able to have Project WET (Water Education for Teachers), Project Wild and Project Learning Tree come together in a facilitator workshop for teachers for the first time – in order for them to become trainers
